Arturo den Hartog Countertenor

​Arturo den Hartog is a Surinamese-Dutch countertenor and prize- and audience award winner at the 2021 Princes Christina Concours.

Arturo started solo singing at the age of eight in the church in Suriname and was one of the first students of the Cathedral Choir School in Paramaribo. He then moved to the Netherlands to continue his studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Rita Dams, Catrin Wyn-Davies, Robin Blaze, Pascal Bertin and Peter Kooij, where he's now a recent graduate.

Arturo is a versatile performer with a big love for Opera, Lied, Baroque- and Contemporary music.

Recently, Arturo made his solo recital debut in the recital hall of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with pianist Daan Boertien. Next to that, he made his opera debut at the Dutch National Opera and LOD Muziektheater Gent together with Spectra ensemble in the newly written opera ‘The Girl, the Hunter and the Wolf’ by Vasco Mendonça. He also performed in the recent operetta pasticcio with the Doelen ensemble and director Steef de Jong.

Other recent engagements include performances as soloist with Ars Musica orchestra in the Concert Hall of Amare - The Hague, with baroque ensemble La Sfera Armoniosa, and with the SEM Ensemble in De Singel in Antwerp. He also toured Suriname with baroque ensemble Holland Baroque, played in multiple performances during the O. Festival 2022, 2023 and 2024, Batenburg Baroque Festival, the Koorbiënnale 2022 as soloist with S t a r g a z e ensemble and a main roles in two contemporary operas at the Opera Forward Festival in Amsterdam.

Arturo often performs music of black composers and composers from his home country, Suriname. He has performed this music at multiple festivals, twice in the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, and to high acclaim in ‘Podium Witteman’. This season and coming season, Arturo is also artist-in-residence at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam where he will perform various concerts.

Next to the performances there, Arturo is looking forward to upcoming engagements that include several contemporary compositions, a Dutch theater tour with the Ragazze quartet and his debut with baroque orchestra Il Gardellino alongside Dame Sarah Connolly in the main hall of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
